Episode 8 / Series 3
First transmitted in three parts in 1990
Adapted from the Ruth Rendell novel by Matthew Jacobs
Directed by Sandy Johnson
A Television South Production
It all happens around the periphery of a music festival, where we find a body. In Kingsmarkham is living, or has come down to live, a great star, played by Peter Capaldi, a very fine actor. But he’s also a good singer, because he stood up and sang in front of the audience of a real music festival crowd, and was very well received.
John Burden’s hero, the rock star Zeno, comes to Kingsmarkham to perform at the Sunday’s Festival. The event passes peacefully until a young woman is murdered. Why was the dead girl wearing someone else’s clothes? And could a secret relationship have led to her death?

Notes
The Wexford soundtrack was composed, performed, arranged and produced by Brian Bennett at Honeyhill Studios in Hertfordshire.
The music for Zeno’s song, Let-Me-Believe, was composed by Brian and Warren Bennett with lyrics by Ruth Rendell’s cousin, Michael Richards.
The Sundays Festival was shot on location at Knebworth in June 1990.
Rhinefield House in the New Forest doubled as the location for the Cheriton Forest Hotel, where Zeno stays with his band.
