Wexford's wedded bliss

TV detective George Baker made an arresting sight when he wed his Inspector Wexford “wife” in real life yesterday.

For special constable Julie Waller jokingly slapped a pair of handcuffs on the 62-year-old actor as he turned up at the registry office. But nothing could stop him and his new bride Louie Ramsay from getting hitched at Devizes, Wiltshire. It was followed by a church blessing in West Lavington, near their home, and a lavish reception for more than 200 friends.

Among the wedding guests was author Ruth Rendell, who created the Inspector Wexford series. She said: “I must have brought them together - I find it very exciting. I’m delighted for them.” Other guests included Christopher Ravenscroft, who plays Wexford’s colleague Inspector Burden, Christopher Timothy and Charles Dance. As he left the registry office, George said: "It is rather nice to be together. But we are used to it - we have done it for six-and-a-half years on the screen.’ Louie added: "This is the best day of my life.’
